Historical Lectures at the Great Šance – Discover the Past through Stories and Demonstrations
In 2026, the Great Šance Visitor Centre will host a series of engaging historical lectures dedicated to fascinating military and regional topics.
These events, held mainly outside the main tourist season, offer visitors the chance to explore the past through expert storytelling, live demonstrations, and historical displays of weapons, uniforms, and training techniques.
Program of Lectures:
- 11 April 2026 – C. and K. Kaunitz Regiment
A story of the military unit that once served in our region. Visitors will learn about its history, organization, and daily life, complemented by demonstrations of period drills, uniforms, and weaponry. - 16 May 2026 – Portáš and the Wallachians – Guardians of the Moravian-Hungarian Border
A captivating look at how the border between Moravia and Hungary was protected. The lecture will include live presentations of historical arms, uniforms, and defensive tactics used by the legendary Portáš guards. - September 2026 – Hrozenkov 1663 – The Turkish and Tatar Invasion of Moravia
A forgotten chapter of local history: the heroic stand of Wallachian defenders in the Stará Hrozenkov Pass on 6 October 1663. - October 2026 – The Fortress and Town of Nové Zámky
A lecture on the founding and strategic importance of the fortress of Nové Zámky, its development, and its role in regional defense.
