The Prussian Attack on Šance – The Capture of the Great Šance in 1741
This major historical re-enactment brings to life an episode that took place 285 years ago. In December 1740, during the First Silesian War, the Prussian King Frederick the Great invaded Silesia, then part of the Habsburg Monarchy. By early 1741, his troops had advanced into the Těšín region and approached the Great Šance fortification. On February 8, 1741, the Prussian army surrounded the fort. Facing overwhelming odds, the Austrian commander, Baron O’Reilly, decided to surrender.
According to legend, the Prussians forced local inhabitants of Jablunkov to march in front of their troops to prevent the defenders from firing. The Prussians occupied the fort until March 1741, when they moved on to continue their campaign against the Habsburgs. The war ended with the Treaty of Berlin on July 28, 1742, by which Prussia gained most of Silesia.
On 18 July 2026, the Great Šance will once again come alive! Visitors can look forward to a large-scale historical event featuring Austrian and Prussian soldiers, cavalry demonstrations, two Prussian assaults on the fortress, and a ceremonial act of surrender. The day’s program will include period encampments, historical music, and family-friendly activities such as competitions and games. A truly unforgettable experience for all ages!
